Rotala Wallichii - Bunch
Rotala wallichii is a stunning and delicate aquatic plant known for its soft, feathery appearance and vibrant coloration, which ranges from green to reddish-pink. Native to Southeast Asia, Rotala wallichii is a popular choice in planted aquascapes, especially in tanks with high light, where it can produce striking red and pink hues.
Appearance
- Leaves: Fine, needle-like leaves arranged in whorls around thin stems. When grown in optimal conditions, the leaves develop intense pink to red tips, making it a beautiful focal point or background plant.
- Height: Can grow up to 10-12 inches (25-30 cm), usually kept trimmed in tanks to form compact, bushy clusters.
Care and Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons, with more space ideal for grouping.
- Water Conditions: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5-7.0) and a temperature between 72°F and 82°F (22°C - 28°C).
- Lighting: High light is essential to bring out the red tones. Low light will cause the plant to appear greener and may lead to stunted growth.
- CO₂ and Nutrients: Benefits significantly from CO₂ injection and regular dosing of micronutrients, especially iron, to maintain vibrant colors and steady growth.
Propagation
Rotala wallichii is propagated through stem cuttings. Simply trim the top part of a healthy stem and replant it in the substrate, where it will root and grow. Regular trimming encourages a bushy appearance.
