Anubias barteri var. barteri is a highly resilient and versatile freshwater plant popular in aquascaping for its broad, dark green leaves and low-maintenance requirements. Native to Africa, this plant is ideal for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced aquarists, and is well-suited for a wide range of tank environments.

Appearance

  • Leaves: Thick, oval to heart-shaped leaves that are dark green and leathery. Leaves can grow to be 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) long, giving the plant a lush, dense look. The leaves are also slow-growing and can live for a long time.
  • Growth Pattern: This plant grows from a horizontal rhizome and will spread slowly, creating a compact, bushy appearance. It reaches about 8-16 inches (20-40 cm) in height, depending on tank conditions.

Care and Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Suitable for tanks of all sizes, from nano tanks to large aquariums.
  • Water Conditions: Prefers a pH range of 6.5 to 7.8 and tolerates temperatures between 72°F and 82°F (22°C - 28°C). It can grow in both soft and hard water, making it adaptable to many tank conditions.
  • Lighting: Low to moderate lighting is ideal; too much light can lead to algae growth on its broad leaves.
  • CO₂ and Fertilization: Anubias barteri does not require CO₂ injection and will do well in low-tech tanks. However, occasional fertilization, particularly root tabs if planted in the substrate, can help maintain its vibrant green color.

Placement in the Aquarium

This plant can be placed in various locations within the tank, such as attached to driftwood, rocks, or other decorations. Because of its rhizome, Anubias barteri should not be buried in the substrate, as this can cause it to rot. Instead, it should be tied or glued to hardscape elements until it establishes itself.

Growth and Propagation

Anubias barteri var. barteri grows slowly, which means it requires little pruning. It can be propagated by cutting the rhizome into sections, each with a few leaves attached, and reattaching them to new areas in the tank. Over time, these sections will develop into new plants.

Benefits in Aquascape

  • Versatility: Suitable for low-light, low-maintenance tanks or high-tech aquascapes.
  • Resilience: Tolerant of various water conditions and light levels, making it ideal for different tank setups.
  • Algae Resistance: Its thick leaves are more resistant to nibbling from fish, making it a good choice for tanks with herbivorous fish.

Key Points

  • Ease of Care: Extremely easy and low-maintenance, ideal for beginners.
  • Durability: Thick, hardy leaves that resist most fish nibbling.
  • Growth Rate: Slow-growing, so it doesn’t require frequent pruning.

Anubias barteri var. barteri is a staple in aquascaping due to its durability, adaptability, and lush appearance. It complements other plants and hardscape elements well, creating a natural, serene look in any aquarium.
